Is archaeology an art or a science? How do we create a body of knowledge about the past? How far from the truth is Indiana Jones? These questions are explored in 'Kilwa , a work-in-progress of a dual-screened film installation by Catherine Watling. 'Kilwa is the beginning of a collaborative exploration of the intersection between art, science and archaeology. Funded by an Arts Council England grant, the project was co-conceived by Junction Associate Artist Catherine Watling and doctoral researcher Stephanie Wynne-Jones of Cambridge University. Catherine spent 5 weeks with an Archaeological survey team in Kilwa, an ancient and once great urban port on the south coast of Tanzania. She worked closely with the team, digitally recording her observations of practical archaeological survey methods, interviewing local people and assisting with archaeological documentation.
