The play follows the browbeaten John and his wife, Mary, who are trapped in a life of religious servitude by Mary's jealous and domineering mother, and the head of the local branch of the Sect of Oswalk Puppycock. There seems to be no way out until the mysterious Sylvie comes into their lives.
