Hippolytus

Hippolytus

Work:: Hippolytus (S3581)

An epic tale of love, jealousy and revenge. Under the auspices of the vengeful goddess Aphrodite, Phaedra, the young wife of Theseus, ruler of Athens, falls in love with Hippolytus, her stepson and when her nurse reveals her love, in shame commits suicide. Theseus in anger has his divine father Poseidon kill Hippolytus, believing that his son has committed adultery. Poseidon exacts the father's revenge and the dying Hippolytus is brought to him. The goddess Artemis appears and causes Theseus to lament when the ghastly truth is revealed.
