A tale of runaway children, webbed fingers and buried secrets... Erin and January live in Whitegates children's home. Running away is something they know all about. But this time they're determined never to return and head down river on a raft made of old doors. When they are washed up on the Black Middens mud, they stumble across Grampa and Heaven Eyes - a mysterious girl with webbed fingers who has a strange view of life. While Grampa keeps the truth of her history concealed, Erin befriends Heaven Eyes. But January becomes fearful as his suspicions of Heaven Eyes grow.
