Hard Times

Work:: Hard Times (S3525)

The repressed desire of beautiful Louisa, trapped in a loveless marriage to Bounderby, a powerful mill-owner, is awakened by the handsome seducer James Harthouse. Thomas Gradgrind, her father, is forced to see love and imagination triumph over hid blind faith in "facts, facts, facts!".
Book by Charles Dickens

Production:: (T1319923942)

A newly commissioned stage play of the novel by Charles Dickens. Set both in the industrial revolution of the 1850s and now, this timeless tale proves that it still has a point to make about the industrial crises, education and the horrors wreaked by industry on vulnerable workers. The result is a thought-provoking, colourful and very entertaining performance that respects the original text, but asks whether we have made much progress since Dickens revealed the incompatibility of the human spirit with the uncompromising logic of industry.
