The play focuses on a recently orphaned girl , Hannele , who has been left in the care of her abusive stepfather . having attempted suicide , she is critically ill, and being nursed by local people . That, however , is just one level of reality for her - she is also visited by her dead mother , by angels , and other apparitions .
