Grupo Galpao's bittersweet interpretation of Shakespeare's timeless tragedy combines circus tricks and Commedia del'Arte to tell its tale of passion and violence. Using masks, mime and music, the star-crossed lovers and their warring families come to the Globe straight from the colourful world of Brazilian street theatre. Their story unfolds in the company of stilt walkers, jugglers and puppeteers. Steeped in the popular culture of the mining state of Minas Gerais, north-west of Rio de Janeiro, Grupo Galpao have been entertaining national and international audiences since 1982. With
Romeu and Julieta, they have taken Shakespeare to new audiences with little or no experience of conventional theatre. Today, 70 per cent of their supporters still flock to the streets rather than modern auditoriums to see them. The production first toured in England in 1996. Performed in Portuguese, using a 1930's translation of Shakespeare's
Romeo and Juliet by Onestado de Pennafort. Running time approximately 1 hour 30 minutes.
