Grassic Gibbon
Work:: Grassic Gibbon (S15410428)
This recital of a new play by author and broadcaster Jack Webster, follows Scottish writer Lewis Grassic Gibbon through his struggle for recognition in his youth to his successful years and premature death at just 34. It tells the story of J Leslie Mitchell - otherwise known as Lewis Grassic Gibbon - from his early years in Auchterless and Arbuthnott through to his later life in Welwyn Garden City in Hertfordshire. A prolific author both in his own right and using his pseudonym, he wrote a total of 17 books on subjects as diverse as archaeology and exploration. However, it is as Grassic Gibbon that he is best known and in particular for his trilogy A Scots Quair - Sunset Song, Cloud Howe and Grey Granite. An adaptation on the trilogy was a huge success on BBC TV in the 1970s starring Vivien Heilbron in the central role of Chris Guthrie. This production maps out Mitchell's life and tells of his school years, his struggle for recognition and his success in his productive later years.
