Details
This spiritual and sensual experience is a three-part ritualistic lamentation on birth, death, pleasure and pain, told through song, chanting and movement. Part 1: Gospels of Childhood / The Overture. Based on texts from the little known apocryphal gospels, this overture to the triptych tells the story of resurrection; its musical structure is based on the polyphonic singing tradition of Georgia, Bulgaria and Greece. Part 2: Caesarean Section / Essays on Suicide. Exploring the question of freedom and its limitations, Caesarean Section draws on the music of Corsica, through which Bulgarian, Romanian, Icelandic and Chechen songs are interwoven. Part 3: Anhelli / The Calling. A tribute to the Polish Romantic poet Juliusz Slowacki and his poem about possession by an angel, Anhelli's musical score is inspired by Byzantine and Sardinian Paschal hymns.
