Ghost Shirt archive'Ghost Shirt is a modern day fiction inspired by the true story of the journey of the Native American Ghost Dance Shirt from its homeland to Glasgow, and its eventual return over 100 years later to the descendants of the Lakota Sioux tribe in America.' (Lu Kemp Artistic Director Theatre By Design). Originally gifted to the City of Glasgow in the late nineteenth century by George Crager, who as travelling with Buffalo Bill Cody's Travelling Wild West Show, the Ghost Dance Shirt was believed to have been taken from the victims of the Massacre at Wounded Knee. In 1998, descendants of the Sioux tribe travelled across the Atlantic to Glasgow, to attend a public meeting with representatives of Glasgow City Council and successfully state their case for the return of the shirt to their people. Through music and storytelling, this production interweaves the modern story of the ghost dance shirt with the classic 19th Century poem, Hiawatha, to create contemporary tale.
