From the Calton to Catalonia archiveAt a time when the Spanish Government is helping its people to rediscover the mass graves of the dead of the Civil War, so long suppressed by Franco and his successors, we are proud to present a powerful, poignant play that manages to both captivate and entertain. Full of pathos and humour, it is a moving tribute to the men who travelled to Spain to fight the spectre of fascism. A third of all British volunteers joined the International Brigade came from Glasgow. The story follows three Glaswegian volunteers in Spain in 1937 - and the lives of the people closest to them: their families and their fellow prisoners. Written by Professor Willy Maley and his brother John, the play is based on the experiences of their father James Maley who was captured during the battle of Jarama.
