But Fred and Madge are also an extraordinary couple. Fred is employed by the State to push a boulder up a hill. Madge sieves water. They take alpenstocks on holiday to Norfolk. They hate modern architecture. They convalesce to the sound of a Palm Court orchestra on the NHS. Madge dreams of working in an Indian harem. The power of comedy rescues a cast from the routine of their stage-bound lives. Soon London is demolished by the laughter of professional insulters, and the exotic East overruns drab England...
