First Drafts: Rachael Young - Nightclubbing archiveIn 1981 Grace Jones released her fifth studio album; ?Nightclubbing'. A rare combination of reggae, electronica, funk, soul, tango and post punk, it was was widely-regarded as her finest work. Thirty four years later, two women were refused entry to the London nightclub DSTRKT on account of their skin tone and dress size. Decades apart, these events occupy extremities on an invisible spectrum of freedom; Grace Jones, a dark skinned, androgynous, Jamaican woman, transcending societal norms to become an international superstar vs two young black women, discriminated against and excluded; their bodies branded undesirable. NIGHTCLUBBING is a new interdisciplinary performance created and performed by Rachael Young, with sonic collaboration from DJ/sound artist ?xin'. Harnessing the visceral power of live music to explore Afrofuturism and intersectional feminism, this explosive new work is about injustice and self empowerment, it's about being a woman and a Person of Colour and it's about taking up space, making noise and changing the narrative.
