Details
A Sussex town, 1606, exactly one year after the discovery of the Gunpowder Plot, and life for ordinary people is still fraught with secrets and suspicions. Two brothers struggle to conceal their religious and political differences, as the first bonfire celebrations reach a frenzied climax. Throughout the script of this play, Sara Clifford has woven verbatim text from interviews with modern day Lewes Bonfire Society members, commenting and reflecting on the rituals and traditions of their local celebrations. Is it just good-humoured nonsense or something darker? And what resonances does it have with England in the twenty first century, on this the 400th anniversary of the infamous plot? Age 13+
