Farewell to the Theatre archive We find Granville Barker (widely regarded as the man who laid the foundations of modern British theatre and one of its transforming influences) in Massachusetts in 1916. Embittered and world-weary, disillusioned with the theatre and amongst a group of British expatriates including a Dickensian recitalist and a love-struck female actor, they are all endeavouring to find their way in an academic, theatre-obsessed community whilst war rages in Europe.
