The eccentric and highly opinionated Count O'Dowda invites several well-known theatre critics to attend the premiere of his daughter Fanny's first play. But is she really the author, and if not, could it be the work of a well-known playwright? In the 'play-within-a-play', old friends, the Gilbeys and Knoxes, have dinner every week, regardless of what may be happening. Even when the Gilbey's son disappears for two weeks, and the Knox's daughter is released from jail for assaulting a police officer, the parents gamely attend the weekly ritual. But when the debonair Monsieur Duvallet and the effervescent Miss Dora Delaney come on the scene police Edwardian society is left reeling.
