Ned Malloy is a young man who is down on his luck. Living in a tawdry NY rooming house with his alcoholic roommate Jimmy, and forced to stage a humiliating event in order to escape his miserable marriage; after hitting rock bottom, Ned has a life altering choice to make. Written in 1919, upon it being presented in 1920, O'Neill pulled the play after a few performances and destroyed all the copies he could find. This is the only play to directly deal with O'Neill's own attempted suicide in 1912: an event that propelled O'Neill to decide on becoming a playwright and write the tragedies that would transform American theatre.
