Equiano archiveBorn in Africa in the 1700's, Olaudah Equiano was sold into slavery as a child. Through determination he escaped bondage to become a wealthy businessman in England. His memoir was the first book written in English by a black man and was the best-seller of its day, bringing him instant fame. Now, like Britain's early black communities, he is largely forgotten.
