The eponymous hero is persuaded to marry the beautiful Belisa who is unfaithful to him six times on their wedding night. Perlimplin, in love with a wife he cannot satisfy, persuades his wife to fall for an imaginary suitor. Perlimplin tells Belisa he will murder this suitor, she says she will kill him if he does.
