Dead Woman's Ditch
Work:: Dead Woman's Ditch (S968392888)
Just days after marrying attractive but simple Jane Shorney, John Walford clubbed her to death in despair. He was condemned to death by a judge who wept openly at his drudgery. He was hanged in the same field in which the murder took place, and his body hung for a year in an iron cage, in full sight of his parent's cottage. John was highly intelligent but totally uneducated. As a charcoal burner he had no prospects. He was in love with Ann Rice, the miller's attractive daughter, who returned his love. This 200-year-old crime of passion lives on in folk memory today. Walfords Gibbet is still on the map.
