Cry, the Beloved Country archiveRecognised as the greatest South African novel in English, Alan Paton s Cry, the Beloved Country was published in 1948 - it has been in print ever since and sold millions of copies worldwide. This is the world s first professional adaptation, produced in 2003 in South Africa to celebrate the centenary of Paton s birth, and is touring to celebrate ten years of South African democracy. The story deals with two fathers, one white and one black, and their two sons. The black son murders the white son, and from this seeming confrontation, Paton fashions a story of forgiveness and reconciliation between the fathers, as they both undertake spiritual journeys that have resonated with readers for over 50 years.
