Coal fed British industry for 150 years and British miners became a beacon for justice and workers' rights throughout the world. In 1984 Margaret Thatcher set out to extinguish that beacon, to destroy pit communities and, if necessary, the coal industry itself. The battle that ensued was a pivotal moment in recent British history.
Burning Issue celebrates the miners' struggle and examines what it tells us about Britain and British democracy in 2004. Through music and song, drama and film, it allows mining communities to tell their own stories in a powerful and moving show of anger, resilience and courage.
