UK Theatre Web: 02Jul06:
as his character's spirit/god/toilet, startling the audience with an unexpected sharpness which overwhelms the otherwise listless character. A contemporary theme with the sensibilities and straightforwardness of a Greek Tragedy. Sturdy direction by Gemma Greene complimented by Cressner's unadulterated sceneography reminiscent of an amphitheatre overrun perhaps by rowdy Eastenders. Lauren Duffie certainly does not play by the rules with such unconventional lighting, but then again, neither does playwright Barney Ashton. Ashton has the ability to mix and match styles with the ease of a post-modern poet, yet book walks the fine line of didacticism. Yet coupled with riveting direction and distracted by rich language it becomes less of a challenge to ignore the teacher and focus on his sexy assistant. More on Barney Ashton can be found on TGA's website.
