Black Soap

Black Soap

Work:: Black Soap (S02092040723)

A government minister finds himself at the centre of a financial scandal which proves to be merely the beginning of a spiral of corruption and sleaze that leads to the heart of a morally bankrupt administration. When an extremely questionable merger is simply waved through by the DTI the press smell a rat. An allegation surfaces that a broker operating a blind trust for the Minister for Trade and Investment bought a large number of shares just before the merger was announced, and the Minister finds himself in the eye of a media hurricane. One stormy night two departmental spin doctors are joined by the Prime Minister's Director of Communications to establish precisely what the Minister's involvement is, and to try to seize control of the situation back from the media. But as the evening progresses it becomes increasingly clear that the scandal is merely a decoy covering the tracks of something far more sinister. A seven-hander, one hour play, Black Soap asks some profound and troubling questions about standards in public life, the power of the media and the hypocrisy of contemporary society. Played out in a series of male and female train-of-thought-style monologues it in turn examines and parodies our ideals of gender stero-types, exploring issues from the male and female's differing inability to turn down sex, to the similarities of cars to arses, to inter-relationship rape.
