Black Hands or Dead Section archiveBlack Hands or Dead Section relates to the brutal chapter of modern German history when a group of well-educated, white, middle-class kids took up arms against a democratic government in which their belief had died. Hopelessly young, dangerous idealistic and living through the tumultuous social upheavals of the 1960s and the Vietnam War, the Red Army faction brought a war against US imperialism into the streets of Cold War West Germany. They trained with the PLO, robbed banks, bought guns and bombed buildings, kidnapped prominent citizens and died in spectacular circumstances. Their's was a crusade of radiant dissent that the state answered with exaggerated and shocking severity. At a time when everyone is struggling with understanding the causes of terrorism against the West, the story of terrorism within the West reveals many uncomfortable parrallels with the present.
