Are You Now or Have You Ever Been?

Work:: Are You Now or Have You Ever Been? (S01251938369)

America driven by an urge to demonise... America closing its ranks in the face of supposed threats to its security, external and internal... America run by determined Republicans demanding unquestioning loyalty and conformity at the expense of individual dissent... In 1947 the House Un-American Activities Committee had set about extirpating the enemy within - Communists, ex- Communists, fellow-travellers and liberals who, it was claimed, had infiltrated every aspect of life with the intention of destroying America. Now in the 1950s they began to close in on an axis of evil of a more glamorous nature: the freethinkers who worked in the Hollywood movie industry. Eric Bentley s play, last performed in the West End with huge success in the 1970s, comes to the Tricycle Theatre for four performances only. The cast will be entirely made up of lawyers, and the proceeds from these performances will help fund the Tricycle Theatre s production of The Bloody Sunday Inquiry in 2004.
