Antonio and Cleopatra weren't just good friends, they were married. They were also the stage act that had endured for some twenty years with its winning combination of illusion and deception, escapology and Egyptology. By 1902, when the play is set, Cleopatra is obsessed with presenting the act exactly as her parents had created it in 1860. Antonio, however, is hungry for pastures new. The pair, apparently unable to escape the chains of their past, are propelled towards a denouement where all is not what it seems.
