The Rifles of Senora Carrar/The Trial of Lucullus - T1629146401

Brecht wrote THE RIFLES OF SENORA CARRAR at the height of the Spanish Civil War in 1937, and it tells the story of a widow struggling to make ends meet in a fishing village in Andalucia. Although gunfire in the distance tells her the Nationalist forces under Franco are getting nearer, she wants no part in a senseless war. But her brother arrives, desperate for the rifles that he knows her husband has hidden in the house, and this encounter begins to test her resolve. It takes a tragedy of great moment to make her finally commit herself to the Republican cause. In THE TRIAL OF LUCULLUS, another of his pre-war plays questioning the wisdom of warfare, Brecht turns to events following the death of his celebrated and successful Roman general. Now that Lucullus has died, he needs to face a trial to judge if he can join the ranks of the blessed in the Elysian Fields. Lucullus argues that his triumphs and victories have brought riches and rewards to Rome. But is that legacy enough to earn him a place in Heaven? The ordinary men and woman who form the jury are not so easily convinced.Producer Robert Fox.
