'We who lived in concentration camps can remember the men who walked through the huts comforting others, giving away their last piece of bread. They may have been few in number, but they offer sufficient proof that everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms -- to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way.' Viktor E. Frankl We are aware of grand acts of kindness such as Schindler's List during the World War II or the Christmas Truce football matches during World War I and recognise these as one off occurrences of resistance against the mass destruction and death of conflict. However, on a daily and hourly basis in any conflict zone many tiny acts of kindness take place between people, acts of kindness that are in themselves micro-acts of resistance and intervention challenging the macro-devastation of war.
A Thousand Kindnesses is a collection of personal accounts of these micro-acts of kindness from across the Globe by people who have recent first-hand experience of conflict. It recognises and celebrates these acts as acts of defiance that challenge the annihilation of war.
