In the summer of 1920, two survivors of the First World War meet in the quiet Yorkshire countryside. One, Tom Birkin, has come to restore a mural in a church; the other, Charles Moon, to find an unmarked medieval grave. Both men hope to forget their wartime horrors by uncovering a more distant past. While Moon remains outside both church and community, Birkin is accepted warmly by local Wesleyans.
