A Dark Night Rises archiveCome and immerse yourself in the surreal worlds of Eugene Ionesco with Jack or Obedience, The Future is in Eggs, The Bald Prima Donna and The Lesson. Will Jack find his true love in the three-nosed Roberta II and manage to reject his family's insistence that he adhere to their societal norms or will he be drawn in to their white supremacist ideals? Are the ?normal' English couples so normal after all, and what is the Professor's dark secret? Jack is an abnormality within society. His resistance to his relations' attempts to force him to adhere to their societal norms are causing much distress within his family who wish him to marry and reproduce. As with Rhinoceros, Ionesco uses naturalistic comedy to explore the negative effects forced societal norms can have on a closed society, whilst continuing his critique of fascism and right-wing propaganda. Will Jack succeed in his endeavours to remain a unique individual and is Roberta actually who she says she is? What will their off-spring, should they have any, become? Omelettes? Proletarians? Drunkards? Catholics? The Lesson is a comic drama that follows the education of a young female student who, during the course of the lesson, falls under the dominant spell of a seemingly innocent and kind Professor. The Professors' mask starts to slip, however, as the student begins to struggle with the lesson, revealing his true and psychotic nature. What are the ultimate fates of his current and future students? The Bald Prima Dona (aka The Bald Soprano), perhaps Ionesco's best known play, tells the story of an English dinner party. Mr & Mrs Smith and Mr & Mrs Martin are two traditional middle class English couples, thank you very much, enjoying a typical middle class English dinner. Exploring the absurd nature of human interaction, the play explores and critiques the absurd manner in which communication occurs within polite society.
