Details
Based on her best-selling memoir, this is the true story of the writer's childhood in a rural community in The Forest of Dean, of
"wild sweet days spent in a small mining village... before the motor car had taken over from the horse and cart and before they built the Severn Bridge." Chronicling her upbringing during the1920s, it vividly depicts the social and economic hardships of the time, but is also an enchanting tale told with tenderness and humour, of fond memories, of family and friends and a girl with a lust for life. Poll is the daughter of a miner on strike and we follow her journey - as she grows from the girl wearing bloomers several sizes too big and praying fervently for Father Christmas to bring her a doll - until her departure to work in service.
A Child in the Forest evokes the innocence of a bygone era and sets a life of poverty and hunger against the beautiful and unspoilt backdrop of idyllic, country surroundings.
