There They Carved A Space combines lyrical text, biography, video documentary, and found sounds to create a politically charged portrait of the urban landscape. Provoked by the manner in which common land has been eroded by greed and profteering, this piece investigates the relationship between architecture and politics, the privatisation of space, and stories of eviction and protest. Emilia Weber and Claire Healy layer original 16mm film footage, archive material, journal entries and oral history. As narrator-protagonists they (re)inhabit familiar landscapes, disclosing obscured facts and memories, to reveal how our cities are ruthlessly subjected to economic interests. This rich, visual essay invites the audience to lament the loss of our common assets and to leave the theatre reengaged with the cityscape.
