Details
The ICA is proud to host the very first exhibition of Kami-Robo outside of its native Japan. Created by Tomohiro Yasui, a leading Japanese figure-artist who has been making toy figures since the age of ten, Kami-Robo are unique, 15cm tall, hand-made paper robot fighters that have a massive cult following in Japan. The exhibition consists of over 100 original Kami-Robo models. In the development of Kami-Robo, Yasui joined Butterfly-Stroke, a leading advertising company created by Katsunori Aoki, who has been a major influence in the creative industry in Japan. In contrast to a vast number of mass-produced, toy products marketed in Japan, each Kami-Robo has its own very distinct and evolving personality and a life that goes on inside and outside the ring. This exhibition includes Kami-Robo designs, iconography, paraphernalia and a film about the Kami-Robo phenomenon.
