A mind-bending immersive listening experience that calls up our basic physiological relationship to the natural world. Trip out to a contemporary listening ritual that combines live and recorded sounds from the natural world with resonances and rhythms borrowed from prehistory. Loosely guided by various realms of scientific discovery (neuroscience, acoustic archaeology and social anthropology) this project explores the idea that listening to the sounds that we evolved with is good for us. Mice: Scientists recently discovered that "friendly" bacteria commonly found in soil activated brain cells to produce the chemical serotonin and altered mice's behaviour in a similar way to antidepressants. Us: Is there a similar effect if we fill our ears with sounds derived from the natural environment? In a week-long laboratory at BAC, musician Nell Catchpole will work with sound designer/artist David Shepperd, drummer Kwake Bass and violinist Raven Bush to create unconventional 'instruments' made of natural materials. Working with the rhythmic and tonal structures used in rituals across the world to invoke a heightened state, the aim is to create a sonic wilderness that each listener can disappear into. You are invited to come along to at the end of the week to test the sound waves....
