Alan grew up in southwest Virginia, in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, a region rich in folklore, mountain culture and stories. The inhabitants of these mountain communities owe their heritage to the Welsh, Scottish and Irish settlers who tamed the region over 200 years ago.
