The opera tells how the entire population of a Cornish fishing village who, in times of desperate need, supplement their livelihood by luring storm stricken ships on to the rocky coast. Even the local Wesleyan preacher assists them, but his wife and her secret lover warn the ships, leading to a dramatic conclusion.
