The Trojans - Part 2: The Trojans at Carthage

The Trojans - Part 2: The Trojans at Carthage

Work:: The Trojans - Part 2: The Trojans at Carthage (S0187133621)

Part II follows the Trojans in their exile to Carthage - a very different place from their own shattered city. The city is ruled by Queen Dido, who welcomes the Trojans when a storm blows their fleet into the harbour. Word comes of an invasion by neighbouring Numidians, and Aeneas puts his troops at Dido's disposal. Thanks to the Trojans, Carthage's enemy is defeated and a grateful Dido falls in love with Aeneas, prompting one of the greatest of all operatic duets. Yet the Trojan hero cannot be dissuaded from his mission. As Aeneas and his followers sail to Italy, Dido kills herself with her lover's sword and in a dying vision foresees the triumph of Troy's rebirth in the founding of Rome.
