With all the sparkle and froth of the very best comic operas, and a generous dose of mistaken identity, overheard secrets and tangled love affairs, Rossini's early work is an irresistibly tuneful romance. By far the most famous opera composer of his day, his best known works The Barber of Seville and William Tell are still programmed regularly at the world's major opera houses, and the overture to The Silken Ladder is a mainstay of the modern concert repertoire. All the comic essentials are here - secret trysts (aided and abetted by the ladder of the title), unwanted match-making, misplaced affections (and expectations!), and a bumbling servant trying his hardest to help, but making everything worse.
