The Juniper Tree

Work:: The Juniper Tree (S737765698)

The opera is a "macabre tale with an unexpectedly happy ending". It is based on what has been described as "the grimmest of the Brothers Grimm fairy tales" - a story of how a young boy is killed by his wicked step-mother and fed to his unwitting father in a stew but later comes back to life.
Music Philip Glass
Music Robert Moran

Production:: (T1441320091)

These performances represent the UK premiere of the opera and coincide with Glass's 80th birthday year. It's one of his few operas in the English language with a magical libretto based on a Brothers Grimm fairy tale by Arthur Yorinks, author of 35 award-winning children's books. The cast will comprise young professional singers, talented children and local community singers. The opera will be a showcase for Mariya Krywaniuk, James Corrigan and Rebecca Moon. Also singing is ten-year old Lia Tynan, who's already made her Royal Opera House debut and Angus Whitworth, head chorister at the Chapel Royal.
