Details

The Beggars Opera is a satirical ballad-play written in 1728 by John Gray. It satirises the style of Italian opera, instead of grand heroes and swooning queens the characters come from the poorest and most criminal sections of 18th century London. Gray's world flips moral expectations on their head. It's a world were marriage is a sham and justice serves money and is utterly corrupt. The Ned's Lament transports the story to a shadowy Edinburgh where MacHeath is crime boss of his gang The Untouchables but is still just small fry when it comes to the depravity of the system.
