Orpheus in the Underworld
Work:: Orpheus in the Underworld (S2044)
Orpheus' trip to the Underworld to recover Eurydice. First performed in 1858 and perhaps the first ever full-length classical operetta, this opera is perhaps most famous for the 'Can Can', or as it is properly called, 'The Infernal Gallop'.
Production:: (T850725846)
The Scottish premiere of the very funny English translation which was originally presented by English National Opera in the 1980's during the Thatcher years of government. The role of Public Opinion, which then bore a striking resemblance to the Iron Lady herself, may now remind audiences of a certain suburban housewife trying to keep up appearances as this zany production owes more to Scottish pantomime than French operetta.
