Appolline has grown; she is a teenager and eager to try to fly again. But meanings darken as new layers are revealed that question Appolline's own origins and the intentions of the family she thought she knew: just who are her real mother and her father, and what part will her godmother's special powers play in the violent climax? The story is pervaded by the supernatural influences of Caribbean mythology - both good and evil - and set with the translucence and fluidity of Le Gendre's appealing musical voice.
