He was one of the founder members of Project Arts Centre in Dublin and received the Rooney Prize for Literature in 1977. He has worked with Charabanc Theatre Company and the Royal Court for whom he directed his own plays, The Liberty Suit and Emigrants. He also directed the world premiere of The Shawshank Redemption at the Gaiety Theatre and Wyndhams. In 2000 he wrote the screenplay and directed the film Borstal Boy, based upon Brendan Behan's memoirs.
