Tin Pan Alley
Work:: Tin Pan Alley (S1734)
Big band jazz musical transporting the tale of Ali Baba to 1930's Chicago. Tin Pan Alley was the name given to the sheet music publishing industry which sprang up in New York in the 1890's. At a time when a song's popularity was determined not by record sales but by the number of copies of sheet music that sold, composers and lyricists were gathered together around West 28th Street to provide music 'on tap' for Vaudeville, Broadway and later Hollywood. Some of the USA's finest composers including George Gershwin, [Irving Berlin, Harold Arlen and Richard Rodgers plied their wares in this musical 'sweat-shop' and the songs they penned have been performed by the likes of Al Jolson, Judy Garland and Frank Sinatra.
