My Mental Breakdown: A Musical archiveMy Mental Breakdown: a Musical is a truly unique show that challenges, reveals, moves and entertains. The weighty narrative is carried by real world insights, a sensitive and poignant score and touches of humour. It tells the story of Toby, a young man struggling to deal with the issues of our times. He is unable to be honest about how he feels without feeling emasculated. He is unable to ask for help. He pushes away his support network. Through powerful music and stage craft the audience is shown how it really feels to suffer crumbling mental health. The Darkness inside Toby's head (or the Breakdown) takes on its own character and vividly shows the destructive forces inside in his mind while the rest of the cast try to shore him up with patience and love. But is it enough? The show encourages compassion and taking responsibility for those that cannot take care of their own well-being. It shows that emotional honesty is a strength, not a weakness. Suicide is the UK's biggest killer of young men. If we can recognise hidden distress, if we learn how to listen to the silent (unspoken) cries for help, if we pull together maybe we can save someone we love.
