Eliza lies dying in bed, betrayed by her lover Robert Burns who has ridden through the worst storm in living memory to be at her side. She is tended by her father James Burnett, LORD MONBODDO, dazzling young lawyer, eccentric high court judge, proprietor of the Cannongate theatre Edinbugh, linguist and eminent philosopher of the Scottish Enlightenment. Through a series of flashbacks this new musical production traces the triumphs and tragedies of Monboddo s life. It is set against the background of the monumental events which shaped Scotland s history in the eighteenth century and which influenced his revolutionary theories on evolution. Theories he published a hundred years before Darwin and theories which bought him into sharp conflict with society, the establishment and the church.
