Boris, an explosives expert, loves Lidochka, a museum guide - Lidochka loves her papa Baburov, who loves his memories of old Moscow - Sasha, another museum guide, loves Masha, a primary school teacher - Sergei, a chauffeur, loves Lusya, a construction worker - Drebyednyetsov, a corrupt party official, loves Vava, a professional girlfriend. She doesn t love him one little bit... but she simply adores his money. Everybody loves the idea of living in Cheryomushki, a fabulous high-rise apartment block - a post-Stalinistic paradise in 1950 s Moscow. Nobody loves Barabashkin, a grasping bureaucrat who, together with Drebyednyetsov and Vava, conspires to cheat the lovely Lidochka of her dream of municipal happiness. Pastiching Broadway musical to Viennese operetta via pop songs, ballet music and film scores, Cheryomushki is an unexpected delight; a serious composer achieving deliciously frivolous music. Shostakovich at his most unexpected, yet with all his fire, inventiveness and humour.
