A play which combines the darkness of Leontes' unreasoning jealousy with the happiness of the sheep-shearing feast is built upon Shakespeare's most absurd plot, with sixteen years of a supposed death, a statue that comes alive, and the famous 'exit, pursued by a bear'. Perhaps this is the riskiest play Shakespeare ever set his hand to. Why is it so moving?
