The Spirit of Mimosa

Work:: The Spirit of Mimosa (S0982980616)

On the 28th May, 1865, during the Victorian era, the clipper The Mimosa slipped slowly out of Albert Dock in Liverpool. Her destination was Patagonia, two months and three continents away, and her cargo was the entire possessions, hopes, dreams, religion and language of the 167 Welsh men and women who were travelling to build a new life. They had been promised an idyll in which to build a new Wales. The reality was very different. The Patagonia story is the most famous migration in Welsh history, and against huge odds and desperate conditions, these brave migrants succeeded in creating a Welsh speaking community which still exists and thrives today, over 7,000 miles away. The trip in 1865 had been organised by a passionate Welshman, Edwin Cynrig Roberts, from Cilcain in Flintshire.
